An Untouched Treasure There could not be a better introduction to the island of Crete than starting from the west, as it is undoubtedly home to one of the most beautiful and well-known locations—and this is just the beginning.
This is a landscape of pure natural beauty, with no human intervention whatsoever, making it truly unique. From the mainland, you can only access the Balos Lagoon by driving 10 kilometers from the village of Kaliviani, the last inhabited settlement in the area. The dirt road is relatively passable, but caution is needed if driving a standard vehicle.
After parking in the designated lot, a short 10-minute walk is enough to leave you speechless with the breathtaking view of Balos. The lagoon lies between the Gramvousa Peninsula, Tigani, and the imposing Geroskino Mountain. From the top, you can also take in Crete's stunning western coastline; on clear days, you may even see the islands of Antikythera and Kythera in the distance.
The Beauty of Balos Balos Lagoon boasts stunning shallow turquoise waters, with pink hues near the shore due to crushed shells and coral fragments. While the aerial view is mesmerizing, the lagoon can become very crowded during summer, affecting the atmosphere and the water's clarity. If possible, opt for a boat tour so you can swim in the deeper, cleaner waters outside the lagoon. However, during peak season, there are still too many boats, and pollution can be an issue. The descent to the lagoon takes about 20 minutes on a well-maintained trail, while the return hike takes approximately 40 minutes due to the uphill climb.
Gramvousa Island: A Pirate’s Hideout Just two miles across from Balos, Gramvousa Island is one of the most beautiful islets surrounding Crete. It remains uninhabited and is a protected archaeological site, featuring a massive Venetian fortress at its highest point. Built by the Venetians around 1580, the fortress has remained remarkably intact over the centuries. A hike from the beach to the fortress via a well-marked trail is highly recommended, as it rewards visitors with breathtaking views and an unforgettable sense of history. The energy of the site transports you to another era, evoking the adventurous spirit of pirate legends.
Gramvousa is also a haven for fishermen and boasts a beautiful beach on its southern side, with crystal-clear waters. However, during the daytime, it also becomes overcrowded with tourists. Fortunately, by late afternoon, the crowds disappear, making an overnight stay on a boat one of the most magical experiences in Crete.
A Timeless Escape From 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Gramvousa is bustling with visitors, so it's best to avoid those peak hours if you're seeking tranquility. It's also worth mentioning that there is no human intervention on the island, except for a small forestry outpost. Balos and Gramvousa remain untouched treasures, offering visitors a glimpse of Crete’s wild beauty, historic significance, and exotic landscapes. For those who seek adventure and unforgettable natural scenery, these locations are a must-visit.
